Auro 11.1 is the name of a 3D sound technology developed by Auro Technologies and powered by Barco for the cinema industry. The audio format creates immersive 3D sound in an 11.1 speaker setup. The Auro 11.1 system is designed along three layers of sound (surround, height and overhead). Based on an existing 5.1 surround sound configuration, the technology ads a height and top channel for an immersive sound experience. With this audio format, natural sound comes from all around and above the listener.
In November 2011, the technology was first installed in the Wangfujing Cineplex in china. In January 2013, 50 installations have been implemented in theaters worldwide. The first movie mixed in Auro 11.1 was lucas film's red tails, released in January 2012. On 1 November 2012 dream works animation announced that it was going to release its upcoming 15 movies in Auro 11.1
